The rival covered within this page is the male childhood friend, Cheren. You willencounter him numerous times throughout the game and he'll usually give you some sort of advice as you travel through. In Accumula Town, Cheren will also be there during the speech by Team Plasma and will leave soon afterwards. The next encounter with Cheren is within Striaton City. Before you can get to the gym, you have to find Cheren within the Trainer School. He will ask you how your journey is going and will promptly challenge you to a battle.
This will be your third battle and doesn't feature any further enhancements to his team. You'll then find him in the Tall Grass of Route 3 where he'll explain the functions of the tall grass. Afterwards, in Nacrene City, you'll encounter Cheren again where he'll tell you that he's heard rumblings of Team Plasma having a plan there. Later on, you'll also encounter him outside Castelia city Gym when Team Plasma have caused the Gym Leader to leave the gym.
The next battling encounter with Cheren is within Route 4 in the path upwards towards Nimbasa City from Castelia City. Once again, he will battle you straight away. When you exit Nimbasa City and head towards Route 5, Cheren will once again encounter you and suggest a battle.
Following this, you will encounter Cheren once again on the other side of the Driftveil Drawbridge where you will both encounter Clay who will tell you that Team Plasma has taken up residence in thecity.
