The beer is produced under Grupo Modelo which is a large brewery in Mexico that exports beer to most countries of the world. Some of the export brands it includes aside from Modelo are Corona and Pacifico. One of the brand that helped the company with this mission is Modelo.

Casa Modelo was born in the small town of Tacuba, Mexico in For more than 90 years, it has been brewing and crafting perfectly balanced beers. Casa Modelo was founded in , the same year when Modelo Especial was first bottled.

It is also referred to as the fastest-growing beer in America. The company found inspiration from the treasured techniques of internationally renowned German brew masters which lead them in creating a model beer in Tacuba, Mexico.

With this inspiration, they were able to come up with a brewing process and recipe which produced a consistently crisp and well-balanced beer that they named Modelo Especial, which means Special Model. For the beer to show off its character, the brewery gave it a clear bottle with a unique shape then they sealed it with gold.

By the early 20th century, when Modelo was born, Mexico had around 35 breweries. Modelo Especial is a light, crisp, pilsner-style beer. But its younger sibling, Negra Modelo, is modeled after the super-popular Munich-born dunkel style , made with roasted caramel malts and brewed longer for a slightly richer, dark-brass-colored beer.
